The bolt of lightning struck approximately 9:40 pm Friday night July 27. It was witnessed by a passing
State Police trooper and others. The lightning strike ignited the layer of polyurethane foam insulation in the roof-panel construction of the sanctuary. Many area fire companies responded and bravely fought the blaze for the next several hours but were unable to extinguish it before it consumed the roof and timber-frame structure in the sanctuary. Damage required the demolition of the remains of the sanctuary and the lower level. While the front portion of the building was saved, it sustained heavy water and smoke damage. |
